📖 How to Use Each Mode

Stages Mode

Navigate through a Candy Crush-style map with 200 stages. Each stage must be completed to unlock the next one. Chapters are organized as follows:

Chapters 1-10: Hiragana (あいうえお → やゆよわをん)
Chapters 11-20: Katakana (アイウエオ → ヤユヨワヲン)
Chapters 10 & 20: Comprehensive revision chapters

Overview Mode

View all characters you've learned in a visual grid. This mode is perfect for:

Quick reference of learned characters
Visual progress tracking
Reviewing specific characters and their pronunciations

Practice Mode

Practice with all the characters you've learned so far. This free practice mode allows you to:

Reinforce your memory without pressure
Focus on characters you find challenging

Stars are awarded based on your performance. Here's how to maximize your stars:

Easy Stages (10 questions, 3 lives)

⭐⭐⭐: Complete with no revive, ≤1 mistake, and ≤180 seconds
⭐⭐: Complete with no revive and at least 1 life remaining
⭐: Complete the stage

Medium Stages (15 questions, 3 lives)

⭐⭐⭐: Complete with no revive, ≤2 mistakes, and ≤120 seconds
⭐⭐: Complete with no revive and at least 2 lives remaining
⭐: Complete the stage

Hard Stages (20 questions, 3 lives)

❓ Frequently Asked Questions

Q: How do I unlock new stages?

Complete the current stage to unlock the next one. You must progress sequentially through the 200 stages. Stars earned don't affect unlocking—completing a stage with any number of stars will unlock the next stage.

Q: Can I replay stages to improve my star rating?

Yes! You can replay any completed stage at any time to improve your star rating. Your highest rating is saved.

Q: What's the difference between Hiragana and Katakana?

Both are Japanese syllabic scripts. Hiragana (ひらがな) is used for native Japanese words, while Katakana (カタカナ) is primarily used for foreign words and names. Both represent the same sounds but look different.

Q: Why can't I hear audio in audio questions?

Audio playback requires pre-recorded audio files. If audio isn't working, ensure your device volume is turned up and the app has the necessary permissions. Some stages may have placeholder audio functionality.

Q: How does the writing recognition feature work?

The app uses Google ML Kit's Digital Ink Recognition to analyze your handwritten characters. Draw the character as clearly as possible, following proper stroke order for best results. Recognition is processed locally on your device.

Q: Will I lose my progress if I uninstall the app?

Yes. All progress is stored locally on your device. Uninstalling the app will delete all saved data. If you have device backup enabled (iCloud/Google Drive), your data may be restored when reinstalling.

Q: Can I use the app offline?

Yes! Once installed, Gojuon Master works completely offline. No internet connection is required to use any features.

Q: How do I change the app language?

Go to Settings from the main menu and select your preferred language (English or Traditional Chinese). The app will immediately update to display content in your chosen language.

Q: What are revision chapters (Chapters 10 and 20)?

Chapters 10 and 20 are special revision chapters that test all characters learned in the previous 9 chapters. They have higher difficulty levels and are perfect for comprehensive review.

Common Issues and Solutions

App crashes or freezes:
Try restarting the app. If the problem persists, restart your device. Make sure you're running the latest version of the app from the App Store/Play Store.
Progress not saving:
Ensure you have sufficient storage space on your device. Check that the app has necessary permissions in your device settings.
Characters not displaying correctly:
Japanese fonts may need to download on first launch. Ensure you have an active internet connection during initial setup, then the app works offline.
Touch/tap not responding:
Clean your screen and remove any screen protectors that might interfere. Restart the app if the issue continues.
Writing recognition not working:
Ensure you're drawing characters clearly. Follow proper stroke order. Try writing more slowly and deliberately.
Performance issues:
Close other apps running in the background. Clear device cache. Restart your device to free up memory.
